Overview & Highlights

Welcome to The Hummingbird Ceviche House, a hidden culinary treasure nestled in the vibrant heart of Los Angeles at 1600 N Alvarado St. This Peruvian restaurant is not just a dining establishment; it's a celebration of flavors that honors traditional ceviche while infusing a fresh, contemporary twist.

As you step inside, the warm and inviting atmosphere feels like a local cantina, creating a homey vibe where you can relax while indulging in fine dining delivered without pretense. Driven by the co-creative spirit of the owner—who is the son of the previous establishment in the space—and a talented head chef, every visit feels like an intimate gathering where the culinary arts truly thrive.

The highlight of your experience here will undoubtedly be the ceviches, praised by patrons like Natalie Krause, who describes her meal as a 'revelation'—particularly the tuna with miso leche tigre. Each dish appears masterfully prepared, balancing bold flavors and artistry. The Nikkei Hand Roll, available in tempting varieties like salmon with lemongrass aioli and crab with crispy rice, showcases a distinct culinary creativity that is both approachable and elegant.

Many guests rave about the extensive offerings, from seafood favorites to unique brunch items. Andy Liang noted that every seafood dish came out as a knockout, encouraging food enthusiasts to explore not only ceviche but also highlights like steak & eggs tostada and quinoa salad. For those keen on indulging further, consider the exquisite five-course menu, which Mariya Yurkovskaya highly recommends for its balance of freshness and sophisticated execution.

What truly stands out at The Hummingbird is its ability to cater to those seeking both a relaxed meal and the intricate presentations typically reserved for high-end restaurants. Diners like Jean Delaunay appreciate the strong personality and vibe, urging those who shy away from generic dining experiences to embrace the bold flavors and creative dishes offered here.

Ultimately, The Hummingbird Ceviche House is a gem that captures the essence of Peruvian cuisine. The combination of flavorful dishes, attentive service, and a congenial atmosphere make it an essential stop for anyone craving an extraordinary seafood experience in Los Angeles. Everything we tried here was delicious! We had a couple ceviches (the tuna with miso leche tigre was a revelation), hand rolls (lemongrass aioli !!), and the strawberry sorbet. The staff were so nice and attentive and the chef even stopped by to introduce one of the dishes. It was great to learn that the son of Maya’s (the restaurant previously in this space) is the owner and collaborator of the head chef. The Hummingbird is definitely a gem for the neighborhood!

I've heard a lot about this place & it doesn't disappoint. It was my first time & it was their first brunch service. It was really focused & disciplined. It was all the refined dining but with a relaxed shoulder. Anything seafood is a knockout & it just feels so balanced. Having tried other ceviche places in LA, this one really stands out. I got to see them prepare other traditional brunch items as well (like steak & eggs tosada, quiona salad) & they also looked phenomenally. Didn't seem like theres a bad thing on the menu to try.

This is a delightful place, and it’s definitely worth coming here to try the course menu. The dishes are all uniquely composed, yet very fresh in their execution. The five-course menus are delicious, and the desserts are outstanding. I highly recommend it to all my friends and consider it a truly authentic, unusual, and high-level cuisine.

A true gem. Decor and welcome gives local cantina vibes but the food is like a fine dining experience. One of the best restaurants we've been to in the last few years. 10/10 would recommend.

I haven't had such a bold AND delicious meal in a very long time... This is fine dining without the pretentious aspect and typical high price tag. We took the omakase and everything was not just amazing, but also very unique and beautifully crafted. The chef and the kitchen team are truly gifted. Definitely a strong vibe and real personality there so it's not for people who like more standard (generic) dining experience... which can explain some of the negative reviews.

If happiness could be served in a bowl, it would taste exactly like the ceviche at Hummingbird Ceviche House! This spot is such a gem — bright, colorful, and totally laid back, but the food is seriously next level. The ceviche is as fresh as it gets — tangy, citrusy, with just the right amount of heat. Every bite feels like a little vacation. We tried a few varieties and couldn’t pick a favorite because they were all amazing. The portions are generous, the plating is beautiful without being fussy, and the staff is super friendly and clearly passionate about what they’re serving. Even the sides — plantains, chips, you name it — are so good you don’t want to share. Hummingbird makes you want to come back the next day and do it all over again. If you love ceviche (or even if you think you don’t), this place is a MUST go!

I dined here today and was utterly blown away. It's been ages since a meal has left me so impressed. The chicha morada was the perfect balance of sweet and tart, and the ceviches and hand rolls were simply divine. The house-made soy sauce elevated the hand rolls to a whole new level. But the real star of the show was the shrimp dumpling - it was pure culinary magic, one of the best bites I've had in a long time. Thank you to the friendly staff and talented chef for such an incredible experience.
